About Denver and the Mile High Orchestra
Denver and the Mile High Orchestra (DMHO) is a horn-driven band based in Nashville, Tennessee, formed in 1999 by a group of friends at Belmont University. Led by Denver Bierman, who serves as the bandleader, composer, arranger, lead vocalist, and trumpet player, DMHO blends big band, jazz, pop, funk, rock, R&B, and gospel influences to create a distinctive “power funk” sound. Their music draws inspiration from artists like Stevie Wonder, Chicago, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frank Sinatra, and Harry Connick Jr., combining the classic big band style of the 1930s and 1940s with modern pop and Christian themes.
The band typically features a robust lineup, including a seven-piece horn section (three trumpets, three saxophones, two trombones) and a four-piece rhythm section. They are known for their high-energy live performances, which appeal to audiences of all ages, from grandparents to young children, aiming to inspire and encourage families with their uplifting music.

DMHO has performed globally at churches, conferences, festivals, and notable events like the 2002 Salt Lake City and 2004 Athens Olympic Games. They gained significant exposure as a top-three finalist on the 2007 Fox reality show The Next Great American Band and served as the house band for the 2005 Gospel Music Association Music Awards. Their discography includes albums like Mile High Hymns (2014), Timeless Christmas (2004), Stand (2002), and Groovy (2011), a Dove Award-winning children’s album, along with EPs and DVDs. They’ve also covered classic Christmas songs and released original tracks like “Solid Rock,” performed over 1,000 times.
The band’s music is rooted in Christian faith, with lyrics often carrying messages of hope and encouragement. Members have collaborated with artists like Kelly Clarkson, Matthew West, and Mandisa, and some have pursued side projects, such as Planet VII and Force Ten, a Rush tribute band. DMHO continues to tour, with recent performances noted in 2024 and upcoming projects like the album One Hope. Their unique sound and family-friendly shows have earned them a devoted fan base and critical praise for redefining big band music for the modern era
